Dallas Drummer
Favorite Links:
Jeff Howe was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, giving his drumming that distinctive southern style that only growing up in multi-cultural Texas can do. His energetic drumming style draws from all of his influences including rock, country, swingin’ jump blues, blues, jazz, lounge and a bit of Latin flavor mixed in for good measure.
This versatility makes him a songwriter’s dream both live and in the studio. Jeff feels that the lyrics and story are the most important aspect when working with a songwriter and this sensitivity keeps him in demand with a wide range of artists including Max Stalling (country), Johnny Reno (swing, soundtracks), John Ivins (contemporary Christian), Brad Thompson (alternative rock).
Whatever the genre, Jeff knows the song comes first and that means laying down a good, fat groove and playing what is appropriate for any given style. Most of the time this means a full drum kit. Other times it might mean a snare with brushes or a conga and a shaker. Jeff’s motto is; whatever it takes to make the song!
Songwriter, Producer & Teacher
Jeff’s talents extend to writing, producing, and teaching. Several of his compositions have appeared in movies and on CD’s over the past 15 years. This allows Jeff be a more complete musician. He fully understands what song structure really is and how important the words are in a song. Jeff finds great satisfaction in taking a small idea and turning into a fully developed bundle of emotion. Jeff recently received an Honorable mention in the "Song of the Year" songwriting contest for his song, "Empty". The song features the singing talents of Andie K. Joyner from the band Black Top Gypsy.
Producing was a natural progression from playing, leading bands, and writing. Understanding the intricacies of how to begin a project with a dozen or so rough songs and end with a fully realized dream is his specialty. Jeff works on each project as if it was his own and this passion is what keeps artists coming back.
Jeff also enjoys helping to spread the gift of music to students of all ages. He finds it rewarding to teach the physical aspects of drumming but also feels it is important to share drumming history and various styles of music. Jeff says, “I get a thrill when I see the look on a students face when they finally understand something they’ve been working on or they see the connection between all the different styles of music. What better way to enjoy life than by listening and playing music? Especially the drums!”
His inspirations
His songwriting inspirations are Lennon and McCartney, Brian Wilson, Jimmy Webb and Thom York. Jeff sites his drumming influences as Ringo Starr, John Bonham, Jim Keltner, Jim Christie, Panama Francis, Gene Krupa, Hal Blaine, Papa Jo Jones and Earl Palmer just to name a few! Jeff’s goal is to continue to make great music while still searching for the next great song and the perfect groove.
